History

Mrs. Negley’s Vision

Conceived in 2006 by Nancy Brown Negley and funded by The Brown Foundation, Inc. the program has an international reputation as a highly respected residency for people working in the arts and humanities.

The culmination of a life working in and for the arts

From a family tradition of philanthropy and support of the arts, Nancy Brown Negley has championed lifelong support for historical renovation and devotion to her artistic practice. For her commitment to the village of Menerbes, Mrs. Negley is recognized by the French Government with the Legion of Honor. And through her strong support of individual artists, she is recognized by the American Academy in Rome with the Nancy B. Negley Rome Prize.

 

Among the many leadership roles she played in supporting the arts and historic preservation, Mrs. Negley was on the board of trustees at the American Academy in Rome, a member of the Advisory Council of the American Associates of the Royal Academy, a member the National Advisory Council of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, a member of the International Advisory Council for the Museum of Modern Art, New York, a Trustee Emeritus for the San Antonio Museum of Art, Chair Emeritus for the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art, Founding Trustee of the Southwest School of Art and Craft, Emerita Trustee for the Storm King Center, and Trustee for the World Monuments Fund.

Mrs. Negely was presented the Legion of Honor by the mayor of Ménebres, Yves Rousset-Rouard.
